“A Day in the Life at Seeker”
Aurora Walker - Research Team
Computer Science Major, University of Victoria
When I arrive in the morning I am greeted by my other coworkers who have already arrived. There is a morning ritual of changing out of my bike gear, getting coffee and breakfast, and then catching up with everyone. I am seated with my team, so I get a chance to check in with them and find out what they are working on before I tackle my own tasks for the day.
What I do on a day to day basis changes constantly. If I am on a research week I will crack open the internet to search for and read research papers. Ideally this is done with a coffee in one hand and a highlighter in the other. If I am on a development week, I will need to do planning, write code, and review code. Sometimes we might get a funny problem to work on, and that is when I might sit down with a co-worker and try to find a more memory efficient method to do something, or really work out the logic to a tricky problem. This almost always involves a white board, wild gestures, and possibly loud voices as we think out loud and debate.
Because I am on the research team, sometimes I am called to help someone else solve a problem. I have spent a lot of time talking with people, explaining approaches, or even just helping debug code. There is a lot of teaching that happens, and I have had lots of chances to be both the teacher and the student, learning as I work.
The end of the week is a particular favourite of mine. On Friday I get to present whatever work I have been doing, explaining the things I found out researching, or the results of some code experiment. For Friday presentations I also need to have a full report, so portions of each day are spent recording what I have read, things I have learned, and the results of any tests we have done. Friday means sharing this knowledge with my coworkers, getting feedback and suggestions, and planning for moving forward so that the cycle can start again.
